What is Biblical Counseling?

“Biblical counseling endeavors to build a relationship with another person in which God’s work of change can thrive. It is therefore dependent on the Word of God, the work of the Holy Spirit and the grace of Jesus Christ. It seeks to build a contextualized understanding of the counselee (past and present) and will view that data through the lens of Scripture. The Biblical counselor rests in the knowledge that he is not the change agent, but a tool in the hands of the One who is. The biblical counselor does not ignore physical issues or emotional data, but seeks to integrate them into a holistic understanding of the person and where change needs to take place. The biblical counselor is not adversarial in his relationship to the psychologies of his culture, but examines research and insights through the lens of Scripture. In his work with the counselee the biblical counselor always recognizes the sovereignty of God, the transformative grace of Christ, and the insight-giving and conviction-producing ministry of the Holy Spirit. In all of this the biblical counselor sees himself not as an isolated instrument of change, but one whose work is intimately connected to God’s primary tool of change; the church, with all of its God-ordained duties, structures, and means of grace.”*

Our Approach to Counseling

We seek to come alongside those we counsel.

This requires listening to and seeking to understand the person who has come for help. Therefore, we invite you to share openly and honestly about what is troubling you before we respond with counsel.

Our approach also consists of focusing on heart issues. The presenting problem is often not the root problem. The goal is not merely to give coping skills but to help understand why the struggle is present in the first place in light of a biblical worldview.

The good news is that despite what our thoughts and feelings might try to convince us of, God has not left us alone in our struggles. In His gracious provision, He has given us help. Two of the main provisions of help He has given us are His Word and His people. In God’s Word, God has revealed Himself to us through His Son, Jesus Christ. Through Scripture, we can know Him and know who we are, and how we are to live in light of these truths.

God’s people are the church. God does not intend us to endure life’s hardships on our own. With Jesus being the head of the body, the church, God has chosen to use His people to help build one another up, to serve one another, to help bear one another’s burdens. Therefore, we want to encourage you to be part of a local church. We want to support your church as they seek to care for you.

This does not mean you must be a Christian to benefit from our counseling, but we do hope all who come to Provision Biblical Counseling Center for counseling will strongly consider the idea of change taking place within the context of a growing, personal relationship with Christ.

It is also important to note that we realize people are physically embodied souls, and we recognize the importance of taking all medical information into account (i.e. medical histories).
